When travelling, it can be hard to find a healthy breakfast while indulging in all of the delicious restaurant options of a new town. After spending a few days in Jasper, I was looking for something that scored on the healthy side of things but still had the rich flavours of dining out. Sunhouse Café was recommended by several people, so I thought I’d give it a try.
My first impression walking in the door: This place is cool. Located on the upper storey of a downtown building, Sunhouse features a glass domed ceiling, large windows and a wicked summer patio. This place has views to spare: downtown Jasper, the surrounding mountains, the sky… you can see everything! The orientation maximizes the sunlight, living up to its name.
I was greeted by a friendly barista, who recommended one of their organic, fair trade teas. I also ordered porridge with apples and house-made granola. Healthy, right? And delicious! I wasn’t expecting that quality of flavour coming from a seemingly simple and healthy breakfast. It 100% filled me up for the rest of the day.
I enjoyed my meal while looking out over the fantastic views. Everyone who entered Sunhouse seemed to have the same relaxed attitude and the place was welcoming and friendly, even first thing on an overcast, frigid Thursday morning. Sunhouse is a relative new kid on the block, having opened its doors in June 2018. These guys have the right attitude and food quality to stick around for a long time. I’m already looking forward to returning.
I’m glad I didn’t skip breakfast!
