Dine Like a Local at One98Eight

“Where do you want to eat tonight?”

It’s a question I get asked a lot. And, as someone who puts together these Dining Guides every year, it’s a valid question. I don’t always have an answer, though. Decision fatigue. But if we’re at home in Canmore and we want to go out to eat, there’s one place that keeps calling us back time and time again: One98Eight.

Located downtown, just off the busy Main Street, this cozy restaurant serves consistently delicious food in a friendly and approachable restaurant and it has us going back again and again for date nights, breakfasts with friends, and even just those nights where we don’t want to cook.

The key to the great food is head chef and owner Anand Kelkar. His internationally influenced cuisine uses local ingredients for a unique taste of place. It’s so much more than anything you’ll find in the mountains. Everything is made in house, from the sauces to the salad dressings and even house-made ketchup. It’s all designed to complement the dishes, and the flavours all work together in subtle yet delicious ways.

It all starts with intention, and then each dish is carefully crafted to perfection. Every element is designed to complement the bold, global flavours on the menu. The result is a menu that’s both unique and deeply satisfying.

Everything I’ve tried on the menu has been delightful, from breakfast burritos and eggs benny for breakfast or brunch to lamb shank, duck confit, butter chicken, or cannelloni for dinner. We always start with the mussels for an appetizer, and I would also recommend the tandoori carrots and bruschetta. Anything on the menu, really, is delicious.

Next time you’re in Canmore and looking for a bite to eat, check out One98Eight. The atmosphere is cozy, the service is excellent, and the food will bring you back again and again.
