Named because many of their food and drink items sell for $5.55, this new pub will fill you up without depleting your pocketbook! HyFive has moved into what used to be a beloved local pub. They offer a fresh take on fan favourites. Look out for their winter menu around the corner! With a hot, new look and a new team to pull it together, it is worth a visit just off main street Canmore.
Hot New HyFive
One of the new watering holes on the block is HyFive.
Recently when I went in to have lunch with my colleague, Kyle. Chef Chris Brown suggested we try his new winter menu. A bit about Chris: he is a self-taught chef who has worked around town but left for a few years and is now back in the Bow Valley. He is passionate about using fresh, local ingredients and is always looking to find new inspiration.
Now on to the food!
Chris stared us with a beautiful apple fennel salad. This crisp in flavour and light in texture appy made for a mouth-watering start. Kyle said after a few bites, ‘I was not expecting a dish like this. In a good way!’ It was something that you would expect to find at a finer dining restaurant, not a bar like HyFive.
Next Chris presented us with two of his main dishes from his new menu. Firstly, a piled-high pulled pork sandwich. Now is a good time to mention, I love pulled pork. It has been my go-to for years, and this one has to rank in my top three. Hands down. Southern Carolina style, mustard-based sauce made in house, just packed with flavour. Served on a fresh bun stack with coleslaw on top.
Next was something that makes everyone just feel warm and cozy on those cold winter nights. It was chilli, but not just chilli. It was chilli in a bread bowl, all fresh, warm and not too spicy. There were items that we did not try, that will remain on the menu over winter. Some of my personal favourites are the calamari, the grilled cheese that changes every day, empanadas, and always a fan favourite, the pretzel.
If you think this social eatery is all about great food and drink… well you’re right! HyFive also has live music on Friday nights. Make sure you get there early because it gets packed! If you’d rather showcase your own musical talents, they host open mic nights on Tuesdays. Yours truly took part in one of only a week ago… Probably a one-time only deal for me, but you never know.
HyFive is a new Canmore hotspot with something for everyone. It should be on your must-do list for the winter. I know it is a regular spot for us now in the office. So stop in and say…. Hy.
