Fire and Ice: Where to Eat in Jasper this Summer

Dining Guide Staff July 24, 2017

Jasper restaurants are on fire this summer with many new options and more patio seating than ever before. Meanwhile, two newcomers are on ice at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre. If you’re looking for where to eat in Jasper, here are some places to treat yourself.

We’ll start this list with the most important meal of the day: Breakfast at O’Shea’s.

Fuel up for Jasper activities with a build-your-own skillet at O’Shea’s. Hot, crisp potato chunks were topped with my choice of nine ingredients (I opted for bacon and tomatoes) and layered with melted cheddar. Eggs (that I ordered poached soft) were the crowning ingredient. Ah, comfort food at its flavourful best.

    Take it Slow

For tender and tasty meat, low and slow is the way to go. At Olive Bistro, Darryl Huculak marinates his free-range organic lamb for a full day to infuse the tomato Dijon flavours. He then roasts the shanks for six hours for fall-off-the-bone results. Does slow cooking drive you wild? At Fiddle River Restaurant their elk stroganoff is braised for five hours.

    Ice, Ice, Buffet

Two new restaurants that overlook the Athabasca Glacier at the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre offer fresh complements to mountain adventure.

    • Altitude Contemporary dining in a sleek space where locally sourced is the theme. Carmen Creek, Berretta, Sungold and Heritage farms are noted beside their contributions of bison, beef, lamb and chicken. Dine à la carte at breakfast and dinner. The lunch buffet satisfies hungers built during explorations of the ice.
    • Chalet Rock and wood décor reflects the Rockies and the original Icefield Chalet, providing pleasant surroundings to enjoy fresh value-priced fare prepared from quality Canadian ingredients. Their ‘grab and go’ market is handy for snacks and picnic supplies.

Book Evenings on the Ice for tasty combo of an Ice Explorer ride, appies on the glacier and dinner at Altitude.
