Birthday Brunch in Banff at Tooloulou’s

Living in Calgary and being so close to the mountains means I’m always looking for an excuse to drive west.

A recent birthday made for the perfect excuse, so we decided to head to the Rockies. Only an hour’s drive away, we make Tooloulou’s in Banff our destination for a birthday brunch. As it’s a weekday, we find parking right in front of the restaurant. The restaurant is bustling, with people packed in for a late breakfast and some for an early lunch.

Located on Caribou Street, Tooloulou’s opened in 2012 and serves Louisiana style Cajun cuisine with a touch of Canadian and Rocky Mountain flare.

It takes us a long time to decide what to eat. The first two pages of the breakfast menu are dedicated entirely to sweet indulgences welcome on a lazy brunch afternoon. Raspberry French toast, banana nut pancakes, crêpes Caeleigh, peach and pecan Belgian waffles… the list goes on.

There’s also chicken and waffles, omelets, skillets and ten different types of eggs benedict, including one topped with BBQ pulled duck and caramelized onion.

We barely make it through the breakfast menu and the only thing we’ve decided so far is our drink order: a pot of English breakfast tea and a coffee.

We waver between the amazing brunch selection and the alluring lunch options including the side of fresh corn bread. In interest of time and our increasing hunger levels, we stop reading further and order from the breakfast menu: An egg-white omelet stuffed with fresh grilled spinach and feta cheese, eggs benedict, and a Jambalaya omelet, stuffed with chicken, spicy andouille sausage and cheddar jack cheese. We order a side of crab cake, as our ode to the Louisiana style eatery.

The best word to describe the food is perfection. The eggs are poached just right, the crab cake’s amount of crunch to tenderness ratio is mouthwatering, and the piquant Creole sauce on the Jambalaya omelet complements the stuffings. It’s the perfect birthday brunch!

Now, to go back for that corn bread.
